Ceau!

We have been in Sibiu for 2 weeks now. The weeks continue to go by so fast. Sora Sam and I are still trying to adjust to Sibiu. Fall has definitely come. It is no longer hot and has actually rained a couple of days. We are still living in a hotel because we haven't found an apartment to move into which means we are still living our of our suitcases and feel a little like we on a permanant vacation. It takes up a bit of our time looking, but we know we will find one soon.

I have started teaching piano lessons to a young woman in the branch. I remember learning to play when I was younger and I'm so greatful that I did. I never thought that it would help me here on my mission, not only with being able to play for sacrament, but also for teaching and finding people. This particual girl that I am teaching was actually introduced to the church through free piano lessons given by sister missionaries over 5 years ago. When we were there giving the lesson, one of Casia's friends stopped by and we were able to talk to her. She has been to church before and she is going to start coming to our English classes. English is starting again this week and we are hopeful to find more people to teach through that. There are so many ways to introduce our friends, family, and others to the gospel.

There is a young girl named Alexandra who is a member here. She has been baptized for a year and is absolutely wonderful. We were able to meet with her and get to know her. She was so willing to give us referrals. I think this is the first time in my mission where I have seen and felt such a desire from the members to invite their friends to be introduced to the gospel. We are so lucky to be here and to have the help of the branch.

We have also met an inactive family that was baptized in 1991 in Germany. They are so sweet, but have forgot a lot about the church and the things they learned as they were taught and baptized there. They live in a cute little house right off of Centru (downtown, I have attached a picture of their front door). They have not had contact with the church in a long time and we are excited to start teaching them with the help of members and to helping them become active. Their daughter-in-law also lives with them and is not a member. We have a lot of hope for this wonderful family.

Yesterday in church we had a discussion that led to the conversation that baptism is not the end goal of missionary work, the temple and continued membership in the gospel is the end goal. How easy it would be if baptism was it, that we didn't have to do anything else, that we didn't have to come to church each week and partake of the sacrament, that we didn't have to continue to live worthy or to have another goal to work towards. We know that there is more and it takes a lot of continued work on our part. Baptism is just the first step. How lucky we are to have temples and blessing to make covenants there to continue to help us endure and succeed in this life. The temple must always be our goal. I miss the temple. I miss the peace, the reassurance, and the love that is felt as I attend the temple. I cannot wait to go again and to feel the power and strength that comes from going to the temple.

First week in Sibiu

Sibiu is exactly what we were expecting to see when Amy got her mission call to Romania...
  1. bright houses
  2. small doors (Amy looks like a giant)
  3. cobblestone streets
  4. the epitome of historic europe
(1st lesson in Sibiu)
The branch is pretty small, about 10 come to church. They work a lot with the members and less-actives. They are being "white-washed" into the city so of course they are trying to find people to teach. Ps. They are currently living out of a hotel....not the greatest.

Photos of Sibiu.... it's gorgeous

Transfer 9...

Ceau!
I am writing you now from the beautiful city of Sibiu. It is gorgeous here and fall has definitely come. The weather is much cooler and has even rained a bit. It is such a clean, cute, small, and historic city with German influence. Getting here was quite an adventure. Transfers went well. I got to see old companions and talk to good friends. Instead of coming back to Sibiu Wednesday with the Elders, we stayed in Bucaresti another night and went to Mission Council the next day. What an awesome opportunity to be in the meeting with all the zone leaders and with President and Sora Hill to discuss the mission. Sora Sam and I learned so much and I am so greatful I had to opportunity to go. There are so many things that happen behind the scenes, all the hours of planning and discussing and ideas that go into helping progress the work here in Romania. After the meeting we had to rush to the train station, but we didn't make it in time. We missed the train. So instead of going back Thursday we now had tickets for Friday morning. We spent the night in Buc again and left in the morning. Traffic was really bad and we came close to missing our train, again. Don't worry, we made it. Because we were both being transferred, we had all of our baggage. It didn't fit in the compartment in the train so we had to stay with it in the luggage room. Sora Sam ended up riding the train on her suitcases. It was such an adventure. The train ride was gorgeous. We went through the mountains and the forests. On Friday we made it to Sibiu.
The branch is small, but the members are awesome. We had a relief society activity and there are activities planned for the coming weeks. They have had some problems in the past with leaders and they are trying to rebuild. We are excited to get to meet more of the members and to being the work. They have not had sister missionaries here for over a year and a half. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but the branch is so willing and ready to help us. It is such a blessing to have the support of the branch. I have been called as the branch pianist and we are teaching primary as well. We have 2 children in primary. They are almost ready to go to young mens and young womens and were both baptized at 8. It has been a while since I have seen a primary and children are truly filled with light and truth. No wonder Christ asks us to become as little children. I love this gospel, I know that as we become as little children, meek, submissive, and desiring to do the will of Heavenly Father our lives will be filled with more joy and purpose.

Ceau!
Transfers are here and I will be going to....Sibiu! It is known as the culture capital of Europe and is located in the center of the country. Sora Sam will be my companion. We are actually going to white wash/open the city for sisters. It will be an awesome transfer. The last couple of days have been hard, saying goodbye to those I have truly come to love. Arad is full of wonderful, loving, happy and real people. They have changed my life and I hope I have helped them, through the spirit and the gospel, change theirs.
This week we were able to visit with many less-actives. Setting up lessons has been a little hard. We meet and talk to lots of people and they seem truly intersted and then we can't seem to meet up with them or all the lessons fall through. It's just part of missionary work. In district meeting our lesson was on discouragement and disappointment. There is a difference in the two. Discouragement comes from fear and doubt and leads to destruction while disappointment comes from love and charity and is ultimately constructive. Life is full of ups and downs, and I know that misssionary work has it's fair share, but may we never be discouraged. May we always look up and remember that life is good, it is oh so good.
The Relief Society president, Sora Mogos, told me something that I loved, "someone in Sibiu needs your testimony." This reminded me of two things. One, the Lord has a perfect plan for each of us. He knows where we need to be, he knows who to place in our paths and he knows what we need to come closer to him. It is comforting to know that the Lord is aware of us, that he is constantly helping us through our journey here on earth, all we need to do is ask for his help. Two, how blessed we are to have modern revelation and the restored priesthood on earth. President Hill was called and set apart by an apostle of the Lord who holds the keys and proper authority to act in the name of Jesus Christ. These two things are so important as we teach the gospel to those here in Romania. There are so many other churches that have parts of the truth, but they are missing key parts that allow them to act in the name of the Lord, otherwise known as the priesthood.

Zone Conference

 Arad/Cluj Zones
August 30-August 31 2012
They're Pretty.

3 September 2012

Ceau!
This week went extremely fast. We had zone conference with the Arad and Cluj zones on Thursday and Friday. I absolutely love when we all meet together. They are some of the most fun, spirit filled, and greatest teaching moments. I am excited to take what we learned and to use it in the mission. How blessed I am to be surrounded by wonderful missionaries and be led by President and Sora Hill.
President Hill, in his closing remarks, said something that I would like to share with you. He asked, "how do we know where we stand with the Lord and does he accept our work?" I have often asked myself these questions. He proceeded to tell us that only the Lord can give us the answers to those questions. Only the Lord knows what is in our hearts and how they have changed. He also said that one of the greatest ways we can know if the Lord trusts us is if he send us his spirit. The more I think about what President told us, the more I realize how this applies not only to missionary work, but to every part of life. As we continue to counsel with the Lord in all of our dealings, as we seek to know our standing with the Lord, we well be able to work through difficulties, enjoy the good times, learn by his spirit and to apply the Atonement into our lives.
This is our last full week before transfers. Crazy how time flies. Sora Cook and I are excited to meet with our investigators, the less-actives, the members. What a blessing it is to be an instrument in the Lord's hands. I just love this work. It is the greatest and most important thing we can all do in this life, to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
